What We Believe

We believe...that we serve a Holy and Triune God (Father, Son & Holy Spirit) who is revealed in the person and work of Jesus Christ (John 1:18). Jesus is the 2nd person of the Trinity who reveals God and His plan of salvation through the people and history of Israel in order to save and empower the Church to fulfill its call to proclaim and live the transforming Gospel of Jesus Christ.

We believe....that the Bible is the inspired and authoritative Word of God (
2 Timothy 3:16, 2 Peter 1:19-21). It is the only perfect guide for salvation, the spiritual life of the Church and the believer in Christ Jesus (Romans 10:9-12 & 12:1&2).

We believe....that everyone is born separated from God and in need of a Savior like Jesus (Romans 3:23, John 3:16&17). This salvation is manifest through the preaching of the saving Gospel of Jesus Christ as recorded and preserved in God's holy Word (John 1:12&13, Romans 6:4). We also believe that once saved from sin and death, God has called believers to live
as active members of the body of Christ through faith, by the power of the Holy Spirit.

We believe....that the Christian Church exists to be a light in this dark and sinful world. This includes the community and fellowship Christ has commanded His disciples to participate in (i.e. the local congregation), as well as meeting the spiritual and physical needs of the congregation and the community around us (John 13:35, Ephesians 4:1-32, Galatians 6:1&2).

We believe....that the preaching of God’s Word and the use of the Sacraments should be the center of our worship services, which are simple, orderly and meaningful (Luke 24:47, John 4:24, 1 Cor. ch. 12-14).

We believe....that every believer in Christ has the Holy Spirit dwelling in them; Who enables them to understand and interpret the Scriptures, determine God’s will for their lives and live as a 'living sacrifice' as an act of worship to the Holy and Triune God (Romans 12:1-21).

We believe....the congregation directs its own affairs, subject to the authority of the Word and the Spirit of God, and acknowledges no other ecclesiastical authority above itself other than Christ (Colossians 1:18). That’s what the word Free means in our name (Calvary Free Lutheran Church).

We believe....that these historic confessions, the Apostle's Creed, the Nicene Creed and the Athanasian Creed, state well the truth about what the Biblical Scriptures teach concerning the fundamentals of the Christian faith.
